A game developer is a person or business involved in game development, the process of designing and creating games. The SimCity series has had five different game developers, most notably Maxis, whose owner, Will Wright, pioneered the creation of SimCity.
Maxis[]
Maxis was founded in 1987 by Will Wright and Jeff Braun so they could publish SimCity. At the time, SimCity's open-ended game play and lack of win/lose possibilities alienated many publishers due to fears that the game would be unsellable. After SimCity, Maxis continued to develop more SimCity games including SimCity 2000, SimCity 3000, SimCity 3000 Unlimited, SimCity 4, SimCity 4: Rush Hour, and SimCity (2013). Maxis has also developed a very popular spin-off series of SimCity called The Sims, which uses the Sims, SimCity citizens, as the primary arch of game play.
Console developers[]
HAL Laboratory developed SimCity 64 in Japan for the Nintendo 64DD game console. Imagineer Co. developed a version of SimCity 2000 for Nintendo 64 game console in America. In 2007, EA Japan developed SimCity DS, a heavily modified version of SimCity 3000, for the Nintendo DS.
Tilted Mill[]
In 2007, Tilted Mill, makers of city-builders Immortal Cities: Children of the Nile and Caesar IV, released SimCity Societies, the latest of the SimCity series.
