The Contest of Mayors (CoM for short) in SimCity BuildIt is an online competition which opens up an opportunity for mayors to win big prizes and unlock limited Mayor's Pass buildings that can be placed as an additional Specialization in your city. The contest is unlocked at level 18 and is one of the features that requires an internet connection to play.

Gameplay[]

Building

The Contest of Mayors HQ.

The goal of the Contest of Mayors is to earn plumbob points Scbi-plumbob-point-iconby completing assignments, which can be selected and done in any order (note: streaks have been added, which give a bonus for completing a predetermined set of tasks). During each contest, each mayor competes against 99 other randomly-selected players all around the same city level. Each contest lasts a week and has a limited amount of tasks available. If a mayor runs out of tasks, they can use a special currency called Golden Tickets Scbi-golden-ticket-icon to get more. Once the contest is over, the mayors are ranked up or down depending on their place. Depending on how many plumbob points they earn, they may advance to the next league (there are 6) or they may move down a league.

Leagues and Rewards[]

There are six leagues in the Contest of Mayors. Mayors start in the Neighborhood League and can be promoted to the Suburban League by placing in the top 30, or demoted by placing in the bottom 20. For the Town League and higher, the promotion requirement increases to placing in the top 20.

The prize tier is earned by each Mayor's leaderboard placement respective to the other 99 Mayors in the league's pool. This pool is selected based on similar player level and city size. The number of possible winners for each prize varies, depending on the league. If two Mayors are tied in Plumbob Points Scbi-plumbob-point-icon, the Mayor who earned the points first will be placed higher. If a Mayor has zero points on the leaderboard they are not considered a participant and will not receive a prize.

Tasks[]

Overview[]

Tasks are (obviously) central to the Contest of Mayors. Not only is there a lot of strategy involved in choosing which tasks to do, which tasks to skip, and how to complete them most optimally, but other aspects come into play too. Belonging to a good Mayor's Club helps considerably as you can rely on friends to provide you with uncommon resources you don't currently have, and you can also earn great rewards in the Club Challenge by earning Plumbob Points for your Club. Read the Mayor's Club and Club Challenge articles for more info. Speed-up tokens are also to be taken into account here, as they can help out with Commercial Store Production Tasks considerably.

Production Tasks[]

Assignment: Produce and then Collect (0/x) <item>

Production tasks can manifest in two ways: to produce and collect a certain amount of raw materials from factories or secondary goods from commercial buildings. These assignments have a time limit that is the amount of time needed to produce the items, plus a small window of extra time. Time can be saved by producing the items in advance before starting the assignment. The requirement is only the collection of the items after they are produced, despite the possibly misleading description of the assignment to "Produce and then Collect" items.

Plumbob Points varies based on the type of item and the amount requested. Commercial items will reward more points per item.

Tips:

  • Start producing the items or materials in advance, then start the assignment before collecting them to save time.
  • For raw material assignments, it is recommended to use factories with five production slots as some assignments may require up to 60 items.
  • For commercial item assignments, maximize the queue of items in the commercial building and then start the assignment when it has finished with those items. If more items are needed, queue up the remaining items required for the assignment. The efficiency of this process is dependent on the production slots that commercial building has, otherwise some time may be lost in-between production. It is a worthwhile investment to purchase production slots if participating in contests frequently and earning SimCash regularly. Speed-up tokens may be used to complete commercial item production assignments faster.

Residential Building Tasks[]

Residential building tasks require you to upgrade or build from new a residential building of a certain design (regular, regional, Paris, London, OMEGA, etc.). These are one of the easiest assignments and give a lot of Simoleons per completed upgrade. Strategy is common sense, but remember that if you have unfavorable design plans (i.e. what items the upgrade requires) you can always ask for new design plans or ask to switch the building being upgraded. This is done by clicking the blue "X" or "🔁" buttons underneath the listed rewards for the upgrade. It takes 30 minutes before the new design plans are ready, which you can speed up with an ad if you're so inclined.

Expansion Tasks[]

A later addition to CoM tasks, these tasks are exactly as they sound: they require expansion of a specific type of area if that is available. Each expansion area has a specific name: City, Beach, or Mountain. If the assignment is for a city expansion, it is for land only. Expanding beach or mountain will not count towards a city expansion. All unlocked regions with available expansions can be used to complete expansion assignments.

Tips

  • Stock up on expansion items during off-CoM time and to wait to expand areas until the respective task appears in the coming CoM week.
  • Expansion deeds earned through Mayor’s Pass seasons will complete the assignment when used. If a deed is currently owned it will use that first.

Simoleon/NeoSimoleon/Regional Simoleon Tasks[]

While these tasks are grouped together by similarity, their difficulty levels are anything but similar. Simoleon tasks are by far the easiest task in CoM; just buy 5 burgers or so on the global market and resell them in your depot. To speed things up, you can have a friend buy them and sell them back to you (known as flipping) as long as the task is active when you collect the Simoleons from your depot. Regional Simoleons can be gained through building houses in the respective areas or completeting export tasks. NeoSimoleon tasks are somewhat easy as well, especially if you have a respectable OMEGA home sector. If not, you can sell OMEGA items to control net towers for some extra NeoSimoleons to help with the task.

Cargo Ship/Airport Delivery Tasks[]

Though somewhat tedious due to the delay in between cargo and airport shipments if you have a task that requires multiple shipments, these are great tasks to do because they also provide you with uncommon and valuable items you can either sell to boost your economy or use to expand your London, Paris, or Tokyo residential sectors. Cargo shipments are equally good, as they provide you with Golden Keys and can be used for Golden Key tasks instead if you prefer (but not both Golden Key tasks AND cargo delivery tasks, due to the cargo tasks requiring the player to collect the golden key).

Golden Key tasks and Launching Disaster Tasks[]

Since finishing such tasks grants valuable Golden Keys at the same time, its worth considering those tasks over others. Especially since obtaining Golden Keys is a task for itself. A good strategy is to launch a disaster with the Vu tower to complete a "Launch Disaster" task, and then use the Golden Keys which you earn from repairing the damage of the disasters. for Golden Key tasks. As always, do not accept the golden key task before gathering all the Materials necessary.

Launch Attacks on Monster, Complete War Shipment Tasks, and Launch Attacks on Other Cities Tasks[]

A later addition to CoM, these kinds of tasks, including Club Wars, in general don't apply to everyone. I myself don't partake in any kind of war activity, not only because I just don't like them, but also because getting new attacks costs a LOT of Golden Keys which I personally prefer using on population-boosting buildings.

Epic Point Tasks[]

To complete one of these tasks, earn a designated amount of epic points during an Epic Project. Read the Epic Project article for a more in-depth explanation of optimal strategies involved.

Rank[]

Mayors will have their own individual ranks as well, indicated by the small green hexagon seen on the Assignments UI. Ranks are increased by collecting a certain amount of plumbobs Scbi-plumbob-point-icon, and will reward the player with Platinum Keys Scbi-platinum-key-icon and Golden Tickets Scbi-golden-ticket-icon. Your rank is permanent and is carried over between seasons.

Seasons[]

Every several weeks, a special period called a Season starts and lasts for 40 days. Mayors accumulate as many plumbobs Scbi-plumbob-point-icon as they can within the season to unlock new tiers and prizes. Everyone is provided with the free season pass which provides a reward every 2 - 3 tiers. Premium passes can be purchased to unlock a second row of prizes, which is awarded every individual tier and contains more premium/rare rewards (SimCash, Regional currency, storage boosts, etc.). A season is very similar to the weekly competitions, except the rewards are much bigger, with limited buildings that mayors can't normally buy. Every season has a different theme and grants different buildings as rewards. During the last week of the season, a Double Plumbob Points Week is activated, where all of the assignments count for twice as many plumbobs as they normally do, both towards the season and towards the contest. Currently, players can only go up to tier 42 within a season.
